China

2005 · Territory Building

China

Players compete for political influence across a map of nine regions by placing two types of pieces: Houses and Emissaries. Cards determine placement options; Houses occupy limited spaces in each region and trigger region scoring when filled or at game end based on house majorities. Emissaries are scored at game end for majorities in pairs of adjacent regions, and additional points are awarded for having four or more houses in an uninterrupted sequence along road connections. The game includes a variant with fortifications and uses a simple card-draw mechanic with four face-up options to guide tactical placement decisions.

Very comfortable length. Thoughtful, but not overly so. Multiple approaches to victory may cause occasional AP (Analysis Paralysis). Upgraded to a 10 after additional plays and the release of the expansion.
