Port Royal

2014 · Card Game

Port Royal

Players act as merchants and opportunists in a Caribbean port, drawing cards into a shared harbor and deciding how long to push their luck. Cards represent people (hireable crew with influence and swords), ships (lootable for coins if players have enough swords), expeditions (goals requiring specific people to complete for influence), and events like tax increases. On a turn a player may draw cards one at a time into the harbor, risking ending the turn if a duplicate ship appears; then the player stops and takes 1–3 cards based on the number of ships in the harbor, paying or collecting coins as required. Other players may pay to claim a card as well. The game ends after a player reaches a target influence threshold and the round finishes; highest influence wins.

This is a card flipluck driven push your luck game. The goal is to be the first to get to 12 points. Points mostly come printed on cards. On your turn you take the big pile of cards and start flipping. You choose when to stop, but if you put two boats of the same color on the table, you bust and your turn immediately ends. If you don't bust, then you stop, and can buy a card for it's printed dollars cost and add it to your tableau. Then, each player going clockwise can buy from your array of flipped cards, but they have to pay you an extra card. So, yes, it is flip-luck the game, but since that's the premise, it doesn't bother me. I usually play with the expansions because I think they add interesting new cards, although I usually feel like the game ends just as things are getting interesting. Right now I'm into it, but I wish the game had a little more opportunity for back-and-forth. At the moment it seems like one player gets ahead and then wins? It's so hard to say, because it's so player driven. If players buy from the player in the lead, handing them dollars, he accelerates. If players flip cards in such a way as to give the leader extra purchase opportunities, then he accelerates. That being said, the game gives you reason to flip more, as if you flip a series of different colored ships, you get to take more cards from the flipped array. I've played the game a lot and I'm still not sure about it. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :star: Multiple plays stay interesting :nostar: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::star::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
