DC Deck-Building Game

Players take the role of iconic DC heroes, each represented by an oversized hero card with a unique power, and build a personal deck from a shared card pool. On each turn, a player draws five cards and uses them to acquire new heroes, villains, super-villains, equipment, super powers, and locations to strengthen their deck and score victory points. Defeating villains requires accumulating power, while defeating a super-villain triggers effects that can damage all heroes, so players balance offense with acquiring defenses and abilities. The game centers on deck construction, timing purchases, and managing threats that recur from the central lineup as players pursue the highest score.

    This is a solid deck-building game that offers asymetric player (superhero) powers and increased player interaction (attacks against each other that might be dodged). It suffers from the same problem that I have with most deck-builders though — you could make the optimal decision at every decision point during a given game and still lose. I will grant that, over the course of many games, the players who make good decisions and know the order of cards to buy/play will win a higher percentage. But, any given game can quickly snowball out of control for any player based on which cards they draw in their hand and/or which cards come up for purchase at which times.

    OK I finally played with a righteous homebrew. In the past, I've played with stingy DC fans that haven't played another deckbuilder before. Those combinations of cards and house rules were agonizing. Not to mention, the cards were parchment. Upping this from a 5.5 to a 6.5. Maybe I'll check out other expansions. There are so many! P.S. Don't play Crisis with new players.
