One player acts as game master, creating and managing a galaxy for the other players, who take the roles of spaceship commanders. Commanders explore planets, encounter alien races, and choose whether to capture, fight, negotiate, or trade. Completing missions earns command points; after gathering enough, a commander can return to base, receive a promotion, and gain a larger ship suited to different types of missions. Hidden pirate ships move through the galaxy and attack player ships, while hazards such as black holes and spatial jump spaces create additional dangers during exploration.
