The game is set in the Coastal States, a prosperous region of trading cities, fertile feudal lands, guilds, noble families, and competing religious and magical factions. Players represent powerful houses seeking influence, wealth, and social advancement through commerce, patronage, political intrigue, scandal, assassination, or military force. Independent knightly orders, priesthoods, mages, foreign rulers, and dangers from the wilds also shape the struggle for power.
