Players take the role of marine researchers exploring the Sunlight, Twilight, and Midnight zones to find and catalog aquatic life. Over four rounds of dives, players collect fish, discover eggs, hatch young, and group juveniles into schools to generate scoring benefits. You must pay the play cost and then place the fish in the indicated zone or dive site on the board as shown on the card and board layout; placement and any zone restrictions are resolved as part of playing the card. (Rulebook p.4)

A “When played” ability triggers at the time you play the card and is resolved as part of the play action; consuming fish and other separate actions are handled according to their own rules and do not retroactively change that trigger. (Rulebook p.5)
