This expansion advances play into higher-level danger by shifting mechanics and content for characters roughly levels 5–9. Combat and save rolls move to a d8 scale and new monster reactions and tougher creatures change encounter dynamics. Players gain access to expert skills, additional spells for magic-users and elves, and rules for maladies such as madness, disease, vampirism and lycanthropy. The supplement also details hirelings and professionals the party can recruit, supplies campaign plots, and updates charts for monsters, encounters, events and treasure to support deeper, more hazardous expeditions.
