Rivals for Catan

The orientation of a region card indicates how many of that resource you have (0–3); rotate the card 90° counter‑clockwise when you gain 1 resource and 90° clockwise when you spend 1, and any resource beyond 3 is lost (page 3).

You check at the end of your turn: you may normally hold 3 cards plus 1 extra per progress (book) point; if you have fewer you draw to the limit, and if you have more you must discard down to the limit, returning discarded cards to the bottom of draw stacks (page 10).

A city must be placed on top of an existing settlement (you must have a settlement to upgrade), and a city is worth 2 VPs and provides two additional building sites above and two below (so more adjacent sites, including diagonal adjacency) (pages 8–9).

If the event die shows the red club (Brigand), resolve the Brigand Attack immediately before the production die; if the event symbol is black, resolve the production die first and then the event; a question‑mark means draw and resolve an event card (page 12).

Regular exchange is 3:1 (pay three identical resources for one of your choice), while a trade ship improves the rate to 2:1 for the indicated resource; the Large Trade Ship lets you trade resources produced in either your left or right region (you may trade from one side or the other but not combine them, though you may trade both sides sequentially) (pages 9, 19).
