Hasami Shogi

A Japanese abstract played on a 9×9 shogi board using pawn pieces placed along each player’s back rank. Players alternate moving one pawn orthogonally any number of unblocked spaces, with sente taking the first turn. Pieces are captured by custodial sandwiching: an enemy pawn is removed when it becomes directly between two of a player’s pawns in the same row or column. A single move can produce multiple captures if it simultaneously sandwiches several enemy pawns. The match ends when a player reaches a pre-agreed capture total, typically five or eight.
