Applejack

2022 · Landbrug

Applejack

Players take turns selecting tree tiles from a shared harvest board and placing them into their personal orchard grid. Each tile shows apple types, blossoms, and beehives; beehives must be placed adjacent to existing beehives to claim honey tokens and pay costs shown on tiles. A rotating die on the harvest board triggers harvests for a particular apple type; correctly arranged apples and blossoms score additional honey when that type is harvested. After a fixed number of rounds players score apples, blossoms, and collected honey to determine the winner.

A tile-laying game with a pretty convoluted point system. PROS - The box art is nice, and the boards and tiles are OK. CONS - The game is balanced around the beehives, not around the apples, which is pretty misleading in the first game but also detracts a lot from the experience. At the end of the day it feels like a number-matching puzzle where the main objeetc in the tiles, the apples, have little to no relevance. - The whole point counting thing is atrocious. Points are recounted almost every turn with an incredibly complicated final scoring. - Some apple varieties are way too similar in their art.
