Hyperborea

Players lead one of six rival realms into a newly revealed mythical continent to explore ruins, reclaim lost cities, and recover ancient magical crystals. Each turn, players draft and play colored cubes from a personal bag to perform actions—move units, raise armies, develop technologies, build structures, trade, and expand territory. Technologies unlock new abilities but also add grey corruption cubes to the bag, affecting future draws. Conflict resolves through unit placement and combat, while exploration and artifact recovery reward long-term development. The game combines bag-building cube draws with area control, tech progression, and resource management over a series of rounds.

This is an interesting bag building game where you are trying to balance action cube acquisition with getting enough new action spaces to use those cubes. The board consists of hexes with special abilities on them, which you are fighting other players for control over. This game straddles the line between euro and ameritrash and does so quite elegantly. The game attempts to minimize downtime by having you draw cubes for your following turn at the end of your current turn, which helps but doesn't eliminate some of the AP that can happen when someone's lined up a series of big moves. The game ends when a certain number of objectives are completed. Although the printed player count is 2-6, this game really only works well with 3 or 4 players. With 2 it's too much direct conflict, and with 5 or 6 the downtime between turns is unmanageable. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :nostar: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :star: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::star::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
