I would only recommend the game at 3 players if you have the arcane wonders edition because it has a limited pool of character cards. Game is certainly fun and has a satisfactory combo mechanism. Update: The first expansion cold waters addresses most of my concerns and certainly elevates this game to a higher ranking.
