Living Forest

Players take the role of nature spirits coordinating animal guardians around a shared Circle of Spirits to defend a sacred tree from spreading fire. Each turn begins with a push‑your‑luck reveal of personal guardian cards to form a Help Line, where solitary and gregarious symbols affect how many actions can be taken. During the action phase players spend gathered elements and guardian strengths to plant Protective Trees, collect Sacred Flowers, extinguish Fires, recruit guardians, or trigger other forest effects. At turn end fires spread and new guardian cards refill the reserve; guardian cards used move to a personal discard. The game ends when a spirit achieves one of three victory tracks: 12 Protective Trees, 12 Sacred Flowers, or 12 extinguished Fires.

In this push-your-luck deck-builder you’re protecting the ? forest from an evil spirit. You’ll be playing out animal ? guardian cards to collect emblems that strengthen your next move. You can use them to buy additional guardians to add to your deck, put out ? fires that may overtake the forest, or to plant a variety of beneficial trees in your forest. The problem is, the more cards you play, the more likely you are to bust and lose actions. The first to put out 12 fires, plant 12 different trees, or collect 12 ? lotus emblems wins the game. We love deck-builders and push-your-luck strategy games so this Ludonaute Game naturally appealed to us. I don’t know how long it will stay in our collection though. It is a bit imbalanced (it's incredibly easy to win if you focus on fire collection only) but I’ve heard the Kodama expansion helps even it out. The artwork is beautiful but it doesn’t make up for the fiddly set up. I don’t mind a long set up as long as the gameplay is worth it and we’re on the fence with this one.

Sääntökysymykset
Ludoyan sääntöapurin vastaukset sääntökirjasta.
Why did I sometimes only get 1 Action even though I drew several Guardian Animals?
If your Help Line shows three solitary symbols (not canceled by gregarious symbols) you get only 1 Action; if it shows fewer than three solitary symbols you get 2 different Actions. Gregarious symbols cancel solitary symbols (so they can allow more animals to be revealed) but only uncanceled solitary symbols count toward the three‑solitary limit (see pages 7 and 9).
Can I spend a Fragment to get rid of a just‑drawn Fire Varan and keep drawing?
Yes — during the Guardian Animal phase you may discard a Fragment to destroy a just‑drawn Fire Varan (returning it to the Fire Varan stack) or to send a just‑drawn Guardian Animal to your discard pile, and then you may continue drawing (see page 8).
Does the Sacred Flower element count toward performing Actions?
No — the Flower element is not used to perform Actions; it is a victory condition only (see page 9).
When I plant a Protective Tree, can I place it diagonally or plant more than one in the same Action?
You may plant exactly one Protective Tree per Plant Action and it must be placed on a space orthogonally adjacent to an already planted Protective Tree (diagonals do not count). The planted tree’s effect and Elements apply immediately and can be used for your second Action if you have one (see page 12).
If I move on the Circle of Spirits and jump over other Spirits, do I take their Victory tiles and get the arrival bonus?
Yes — when you move you may jump over Spirits on intervening rocks (you don’t count their rocks) and you take one Victory tile of your choice from each Spirit you jump over; you also trigger the arrival rock’s bonus (moving at least one rock is required to trigger a bonus) (see page 11).
