Catan

Players expand a fledgling colony on an island by building settlements, cities and roads on a modular hex board. Each turn dice determine which terrain tiles produce resources (brick, wood, ore, wheat, sheep), and players collect matching resource cards to spend on construction, development cards, or trades. Setup mixes hex tiles and number tokens to create a different island each game, with ports on the coast for favorable trades. A robber piece blocks production on a tile and can be moved when a 7 is rolled, allowing the active player to steal a resource from an adjacent opponent. Points come from buildings, longest road, largest army and certain development cards; the first player to reach the target total wins.

This was my gateway game into the hobby and we played it a bunch. While you can reduce the luck factor with good placement, strategy, and negotiation … the luck factor can still swing any game in almost any direction. It doesn’t always happen, but it’s often enough for the game to have fallen in my favor. Catan also tends to stall in the late game and almost encourage king-making for people who have lost and just want it to end. I’ll still play with the Cities and Knights expansion once in a great while and have fun with it, but there are so many better games to play now.

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Can I build a settlement right next to another settlement if it’s mine?

No. The three neighboring intersections must all be vacant, and your settlement must connect to at least one of your own roads (p. 5).

When a number is rolled, do only the player whose turn it is get resources?

No. All players with settlements or cities beside hexes showing that number collect resources; a settlement gets 1 card per producing hex, and a city gets 2 (p. 4).

What happens when someone rolls a 7?

No one collects resources. Players with more than 7 resource cards discard half, rounded down, and the roller must move the robber to a different hex and steal a random resource card from an adjacent opponent if possible (pp. 5, 11).

Can I trade with the other players whenever I want, or can they trade with each other?

Trades with other players happen only during the current player’s turn, and that player must be part of every trade. You can’t give cards away or trade development cards (pp. 7, 14).

Can I play a development card on the same turn I buy it?

Usually, no: you may not play a development card bought that turn. The exception is a victory point card, which you may reveal immediately if it lets you win (pp. 5, 7).

If I reach 10 points during someone else’s turn, do I win right away?

No. You can win only on your own turn, when you have at least 10 victory points; if you reach 10 on another player’s turn, wait until your turn to claim victory (pp. 5, 7, 14).
