Saltfjord

2024 · City Building

Saltfjord

Players guide a 19th-century Norwegian fishing village as it adapts to change and opportunity. Over three rounds, players draft dice to activate buildings on a personal grid, producing resources and triggering actions like sending fishing boats, fulfilling trade orders, advancing technology tracks, or constructing new buildings. Drafted dice activate all buildings in the corresponding row or column, and placing more buildings increases future activations. Technology tracks grant special upgrades and abilities that affect fishing and production. Variable setup options and end-scoring tiles change each play for replayability.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When I take a die, can I pay fish to change its value — and does the value wrap from 6 to 1?

Yes — when you take a die you may pay 1 fish per ±1 change to its value, and values do NOT wrap (changing 1→6 costs 5 fish). (page 7)

If I place a die to activate a row/column, can I activate buildings past boardwalk spaces or buildings that already have a die/worker?

No — you may only activate buildings (not boardwalks), and the buildings you activate must be vacant and activated in order from the row/column start until you stop or hit an occupied space; place the die on the last building you activated. (page 7)

I built a small building tile during my turn — can I activate that new tile immediately?

Yes — if you place a small building tile in the same row/column you are activating and you place it to the right (for a row) or below (for a column) of the building you used for the action, you may activate that new building this turn. (page 9)

Do I automatically get boardwalk rewards when I fill a row or column?

Yes — when you completely fill a row or column you gain the reward shown on each boardwalk in that row/column (if any), and if you complete a row and column at the same time you collect the intersection boardwalk reward twice. (page 9)

When I complete an order where do I put the crate tile and how do crate sets score at the end?

Pay the resources on a face-up crate tile, take it and place it face-down in the next open slot to the right of the matching pier on your storage board; at final scoring, each set of four crate tiles placed outside different piers scores 3 points, then all crate tiles are flipped and scored for their printed points. (pages 8, 13)

If I return home from fishing, do I get the resources on the fishing tokens before I score the area or after?

When you return home you first score the points shown adjacent to your boat's current area, then move back to the harbor and gain the rewards from each fishing token on your boat tile — you do NOT gain the token’s resource cubes before returning home. (page 9)
