Coimbra

Players lead patrician houses in 15th–16th century Portugal, seeking prestige by cultivating ties with monasteries, sponsoring voyages, and courting the city’s influential citizens. Each round players draft dice that serve multiple functions: they determine available actions, influence purchasing power, and shape whom a player can recruit or favor. Players balance immediate gains against long-term synergies among citizens, monasteries, and expedition tiles while managing coin and protective tokens to secure favors. Variable citizen abilities and changing market options create shifting strategies and multiple paths to victory.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When do we retrieve the dice and in what order are the actions resolved?

Dice are retrieved in Phase C when the four city locations are evaluated from top (castle) to bottom; within each location dice are resolved left-to-right so the current leftmost die’s owner takes the location action and then retrieves that die to a shutter space. (page 7)

How must I place dice in the castle versus the other city locations?

When placing a die in the castle all dice there must form a row of ascending values left-to-right (1→6); in the upper/central/lower city locations all dice must form a row of descending values left-to-right (6→1), and placement affects which favor tile or character-card position you can later claim. (page 6)

What happens when a die token is the leftmost die in games with fewer than four players?

When a die token is triggered, remove the character card with the highest influence value from the adjacent row (leftmost of tied cards) to the discard pile, flip that die token face down and continue triggering the new leftmost die; after the location is finished flip face-down tokens face up again. (page 8)

How are influence-track majorities scored at the end of the game and how are ties handled?

At game end each influence track awards points for first/second (and third only in 4‑player) according to the scoring tile; if disks share a space the disk that arrived first (is lower in the stack) counts as being farther up, 3‑player games award only first and second, and in 2‑player games second place is awarded only if the second player is within 3 spaces. (page 10)

When can I invest in a voyage, how do I pay, and how do voyages score?

In Phase F each player may invest in one voyage by immediately paying its shown cost in guards or coins and placing a disk on that voyage (you may invest in each voyage only once); voyages are scored at game end according to their tasks (see page 16 for each voyage’s scoring rules). (pages 9, 16)
