Pontifex

Pontifex is a board game for 2–4 players. It plays in 90–120 minutes and is meant for ages 14 and up. Ludoya players call it best with 3.

Players take the roles of Catholic Church cardinals competing to gain enough support to be elected Pope. They collect taxes, move between dioceses, and persuade or bribe other cardinals, resolving persuasion with a D20 roll. Action cards and pilgrimages to Rome can improve players’ sanctity, sins, and movement points, or affect other players’ stats. The game uses an ironic, contemporary setting with scandals, corruption, and political maneuvering represented through cartoonish cards.
