Power Grid Deluxe: Europe/North America

Players compete to build and operate the most extensive electrical network across Europe or North America using a large double-sided board and upgraded components. Gameplay centers on auctioning for power plants, buying fuel (coal, oil, natural gas, uranium) to run them, and connecting cities along pre-existing routes to expand a network. New power plants enter the market as others are bought, forcing players to balance upgrades against leaving better plants available to opponents. Resource market management and route cost influence expansion decisions, and the game ends when a player reaches a set network size and players compare how many cities each can supply.

I like the look of this version. The plastic money chips look cheaper in photographs than they actually feel in-game. They have little impressions on them of the denominations, which is nice. I like that game handles 6 players, but it's odd that no matter if you have 5 or 6, you still close off two portions of the board when you play. Odd because, I've never seen a game close off any portions of the board when you are playing with the max players. I guess it adds some replayability? The game has three phases, but Phase 2 can sometimes never happen or only last 1 turn, which seems odd. The last two turns can be very slow as players calculate their moves out. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ☆ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★☆☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment
