Egizia: Shifting Sands

Players sail north along the Nile, placing boats in sequence to claim action spaces and restrict future options. Boats collect resources such as stone and workers from quarries and fields, and placements influence available grain production driven by the river’s flood cycle. Collected resources and workers are used to reserve and construct monuments; buildings require bricks placed over multiple turns and can grant endgame bonuses. The edition adds new monuments with unique mechanics—a Colonnade that grants progressive powers as columns are added, and small statues that accept one brick per round but offer high-reward conditions—introducing variable rewards and new planning considerations while preserving the original placement and resource-management tensions.

In this game you lay workers down to claim actions along the river, with the important caveat that you generally can't go upstream from your previous placements. The game is full of interesting push your luck situations in terms of trying to get all you need to succeed, but also wanting to rush down the line to the better actions. As you play you increase the abilities of your workers to lay brick tokens into the various structures for victory points or other interesting rewards. There's some tension in the game as you need to feed your workers each turn, but players can manipulate the water supply such that the higher yield cards might not pay out some rounds. The game has everything going for it, except that turn order is adjusted at the end of the round from least to most victory points, and it's pretty difficult to calculate that positioning out ahead of time. The push your luck elements of the game make scarcity of actions high, so turn order in the last two rounds becomes uncontrollable yet absolutely crucial and that can be frustrating. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ☆ Multiple plays stay interesting ☆ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★★☆☆ Raw enjoyment
