First Empires

An alternate-history imperial strategy game in which each player guides an ancient nation from a personal empire board using meeples, cards, and dice. On each turn players roll dice tied to five board abilities, spend results to move, expand, annex territories, or develop improvements, and use swords or superior forces to displace opponents. Dice and board upgrades unlock additional rolls, rerolls, and achievement cards. The game runs a set number of rounds; scoring combines played achievement cards, points on personal boards, and the total of controlled cities.

I was drawn to this because of the gorgeous production, small footprint, and the promise of a quick/fun dice-chucking area-control game. (i don't really have any games like this, especially with dice). I was expecting to enjoy this for a handful of games and be done with it. However, I was pleasantly surprised after my first play as it was actually not as light/breezy as I thought it would be and had enough interesting decisions to make it have far more staying power than I originally anticipated. To be clear, I don't think the rules were more complicated than I anticipated, but the depth and the opportunities they presented during gameplay were a surprise, and I welcome it!
