Players lead one of five organized crime families competing for control of New York City during the 1930s–40s. The map is divided into five boroughs where businesses (arms, prostitution, illegal gambling, etc.) generate income and influence. Players spend money and respect points to recruit and upgrade members (capos, soldiers) who exert control over domains, defend holdings and launch assaults. Play balances defending possessions with expanding into new territories; many attacks, defenses and event-driven actions resolve with dice rolls. Each player receives a primary goal at the start and may pursue secondary objectives for additional respect; the winner meets their main goal and accumulates the most respect points.
