Players guide an ancient civilization from the Stone Age through the Late Iron Age on a Mediterranean-centred map, expanding population, founding cities, and engaging in border conflicts. Wealth and resources come from cities and a central trading phase where players openly and secretly exchange commodity cards; some traded cards are calamities that impose penalties on holders. Collected wealth buys one of 51 civilization advances across Arts, Crafts, Science, Civics and Religion, which grant ongoing benefits and discounts toward future advances. Play emphasizes map positioning, interactive trading, and long-term development as players accumulate victory points from territory, cities, advances and surviving calamities.
