Ghost Stories

Spelarna är taoistmunkar som samarbetar för att skydda en by mot vågor av spöken och helveteshärskarens, Wu-Fengs, inkarnationer. Varje tur frammanas ett nytt spöke som placeras på bybrädet. Munkarna förflyttar sig mellan brickorna för att använda byns specialhandlingar, lägga ut fällor, rena hemsökta platser, återuppväcka fallna munkar eller driva ut spöken på intilliggande brickor. Utdrivningar avgörs genom att slå färgade tärningar och använda färgade tao-markörer för att matcha ett spökes motstånd. Olika spöken och Wu-Fengs inkarnationer har unika förmågor som gör spelet mer komplicerat. Gruppen vinner genom att besegra Wu-Fengs sista inkarnationer och förlorar om för många brickor blir hemsökta, alla munkar dör eller kortleken tar slut medan Wu-Feng fortfarande är kvar.

The first thing to mention is that this game is HARD. Really hard. But if you're into a challenge (and a lot of fun) then this might be one to consider picking up. As a collaborative game, ghost stories manages to make a frantic yet rewarding experience, despite the issues often found in co-op games. For example, the irritating alpha player system that so often arises in games like pandemic and betrayal is completely non-existent here, due entirely to the sheer difficulty of the game. If no-one knows what the hell is going on then no-one can take over. The gameplay itself is hard to understand at first, but after a few games it clicks, making for some of the most exhilerating and satifying moments I've ever experienced in a game. Furthermore, the semi-asymetricality of the character abilities adds a touch of personality to the game, forging roles within the group aside from those explicitely mentioned. These abilities are very well balanced, with each feeling satisfactorially different and significant, yet not so game breaking as to ensure the game revolves around the powers assigned to each player. Honestly, there isn't much I can think of that the game lacks, aside from maybe a difficulty that exludes a certain playerbase. It's snappy, intense, adrenaline-inducing, and genuinly fun, all contributing to a spectacular and often hilarious mish-mash of mechanics that still seem to blend into each other expertly. One of the hardest cooperative board games ever. Created by Bauza. I thought is gonna like me more, but I found it kind of imposible and not so great.
