A Few Acres of Snow

Two players reenact the struggle between European powers for control of 17th–18th century North America. Cards represent locations, units and resources; players build and modify their decks over the course of the game, gaining new cards when they capture spaces. Each card has multiple possible uses and a played card is resolved in a single chosen role, blending deck-building with card-driven strategy. Players balance military operations, colonization and economic development while managing relations with Native American factions and contesting territory on the map.

The general idea is one player is the British and starts with lots of money and ports. One player is the french and starts with some military strength and access to a lot of locations that produce pelts that can be sold for tons of money. Each player deckbuilds in different ways to progress their goals, but also in response to each other. Like a good historical combat game, this game really made me imagine what it was like during this period, in particular how difficult it is to maintain supply lines and move troops around. The game is a slog, but in a good way. A thematic way. I will admit this didn't have much staying power for me because I rarely get 2 player games to the table, but especially ones that feature direct confrontation. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment
