Panamax

Players run competing shipping companies operating around the Panama Canal region. They take contracts, load cargo and move ships along a bi-directional route to deliver goods between Europe, China and both US coasts. Turns use a shared action-dice selection table: removing a die determines available actions each round and triggers ship movement via a chain-reaction “pushing” system to make room in the Canal. Players also buy and hold company stock, collect dividends, manage transportation fees and balance investment versus operational profits to grow their personal net worth over three rounds.

The general idea of the game is you have two sides of the canal, loaded with some unaligned ships. You have a set of dice that represent cargo, that are divided into two groups. One half to ship this turn, one half to ship next turn. Your goal is to get the dice to sit in spots that won't cost you a lot of money to store, and ideally get them across the canal so they earn you money instead. This is done by more or less putting your ships in the way of other ships, so they have to push you out. Add to that this interesting element of being able to load your cargo onto or move any ship on the board, not just your own, and being able to invest in other players so you get payouts from their successes and you have a really brain burning game. All this, and you yourself only get 12 turns. 4 actions per round. Wow. This game does want exactly 4 players, even though the box says 2-4, because with fewer than 4 players, there aren't really enough move actions taken to make sure that starting on either side of the canal is viable. Additionally, a few bits of the game are unnecessarily hard to understand including the cards and the rail track that determines turn order. It's manageable, but these elements keep this game from being easily teachable. :nostar: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :star: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::star::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
