Players develop Venice from an empty lagoon by placing wooden columns, marking them with their colors, and adding buildings and squares to form districts. Building on another player's columns awards that player victory points, while the gondola scores when districts are built beside the Canale Grande. Each round, players secretly choose one of five action cards representing Venetian characters, then play the cards clockwise before passing them to the next player. Characters build columns, supply or construct districts, reveal opponents' cards, remove districts, or benefit from other players' actions. When all 60 columns are placed, the player with the most victory points wins.
