Expedition: Northwest Passage – HMS Terror Edition

Lead a mid-19th-century Arctic search expedition aiming to locate the lost Franklin party and chart the Northwest Passage. Players allocate crew between ship and sled to take actions such as exploring sea tiles, moving through ice, gathering clues about Franklin’s fate, and mapping new areas. Seasons advance and sea ice grows, altering movement and blocking routes, so timing and route planning matter. Victory points come from clues collected, maps completed, and ultimately finding the passage and returning to Greenland before time runs out. Resource and crew management drive choices as players balance exploration with the need to get home.

Very clever exploration/tile laying game. You get a boat and a sled and a certain number of workers who are on one or the other. On your turn, you take one available action for it's cost and then as many additional actions as you like, paying an extra worker on top of any costs for each. There are points for picking things up, for making it the whole way across the board and for getting home in time. At some point part of the board freezes which locks your ship in place, but allows your sled to walk across the water areas of the tiles. Quick, fun, and very tight! ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ☆ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★★☆☆ Raw enjoyment
