Players hire a character each round and use that role’s special ability to gather gold, manipulate cards, eliminate or target opposing characters, and build structures for points. On a turn a player either takes gold or draws building cards, then may construct a building (architect allows up to three). Buildings come in five colors, some with special powers, and are worth points at game end; bonuses reward having eight buildings or a full-color set. An expanded set of action cards mixes into the building deck, offering one-use effects and endgame point value, and the round sequence proceeds by character number from assassin to king.
