Bios: Megafauna (Second Edition)

Players begin as basic life forms colonizing drifting continental plates on the early landmasses of the Phanerozoic. They evolve traits, migrate, and compete for resources as environments change and continents shift. Gameplay centers on adapting species via trait acquisition and speciation, managing population and range, and responding to ecological pressures and extinction events. The game links optionally with a predecessor title so one game's end state can influence another's start, but it also plays standalone.

9 for theme integration and 7.5 for game mechanics. Excellent theme, one of the best representation in the market. The mechanics are solid and interesting, pretty fun and everything makes sense. But the game is perhaps too long and swingy at the same time, it's more of an experience: what you've done 5-6 turns ago on the map, probably doesn't count much anymore and can be wiped out by a single event. The growth and mutation mechanic is perfect, the interaction is meaningful and felt. Shame that all this is so solid that it would translate to a spreadsheet game, if it wasn't for the events - which however are way too swingy for a 4h game. Compared to another thematic and long game, with totally different mechanics, JoCo, this one feels like going through the motions and hope for the best, while the other keeps things interesting with the negotiation and cooperation, while at the same time adding a crapload of luck. But in that case, I'm more ready to accept it, I haven't worked hard in a Euro-like optimisation and area control game all the time
