1882: Assiniboia

Players operate railway companies in the Assiniboia region during the 1880s prairie railway boom, building track, running trains and managing company finances. The game uses full capitalization rules, private companies with special powers (including one that moves a station marker), and neutral station markers on the map. A public company modeled after Canadian National exists and uses only neutral markers. Play focuses on route development, stock market mechanics and company operations typical of 18xx titles.

2p is -as expected- quite boring 3p - surprisingly pleasant, one of the few 18xx that works very well at this player count. Compared to 4p it is a bit soft but still very enjoyable, bankrupt is still quite probable, contrary to 3p 1830 which is very rare. 4p - perfect number to play with. It was the first time we played with 2nd game players and it was pretty well balanced. Really feels like a condensed 1830 with traps. So far it seems to me the only 1830 clone to provide a very fun game in a sub-3.5h playtime and/or sub-4p. Games can last 4h at the very very extreme, more often it is in 2.5-3.5h range. The twists keep the 1830 paradigm fresh, and the map is very fun to play with. Privates and rules original enough and entertaining. After 5 plays, while not having the scope of a more complex 18xx, it retains a freshness and excellent variability of play.
