Players take the roles of pirate captains who build and outfit their own ships, recruit crew, and stock weapons, cannons, ammunition and provisions while operating on a city board. Play proceeds over four seasons, each split into a preparation phase where players place pirates in the city to collect items and strengthen their vessel, and an expedition phase where ships sail to sea to tackle outposts, fight sea monsters, and plunder goods. Actions consume provisions and require appropriately manned weapons and cannons; special pirate pets grant unique powers. At the end of voyages players return to port and score points by recounting their exploits, with the highest total determining the winner.
