First Empires

Un gioco di strategia imperiale in una storia alternativa, in cui ogni giocatore guida un’antica nazione dal proprio tabellone imperiale usando meeple, carte e dadi. A ogni turno, i giocatori tirano i dadi associati a cinque abilità del tabellone e spendono i risultati per muoversi, espandersi, annettere territori o sviluppare miglioramenti, usando spade o forze superiori per spodestare gli avversari. I potenziamenti dei dadi e del tabellone sbloccano tiri aggiuntivi, ritiri e carte obiettivo. La partita dura un numero prestabilito di round; il punteggio combina le carte obiettivo giocate, i punti sui tabelloni personali e il numero totale di città controllate.

I was drawn to this because of the gorgeous production, small footprint, and the promise of a quick/fun dice-chucking area-control game. (i don't really have any games like this, especially with dice). I was expecting to enjoy this for a handful of games and be done with it. However, I was pleasantly surprised after my first play as it was actually not as light/breezy as I thought it would be and had enough interesting decisions to make it have far more staying power than I originally anticipated. To be clear, I don't think the rules were more complicated than I anticipated, but the depth and the opportunities they presented during gameplay were a surprise, and I welcome it!
