Agricola expert-editie

Players manage a small 17th-century homestead, expanding their household, improving fields and buildings, and raising animals to sustain and grow their family. Each turn players place family-member workers on a shared action board to collect resources, build improvements, sow and harvest crops, and acquire new cards that modify options. Feeding an increasing family requires careful planning of food production from crops, livestock, and other sources. The game uses wooden components and a revised card set and ruleset that streamline play while preserving the original card-driven strategy and long-term planning.

There was a time when I was obsessed with Agricola. The trouble I wound up in was this repetitive feeling I got when forced to expand my worker pool. The dance to see who got to use the family growth action first, and who got to use the family growth without room spot got tiresome. I tried solving this apparent issue by over-expanding the game. I bought every card deck, and the Farmers of the Moore expansion. The problem wasn't solved, but the game did get unwieldy. I had to use white cardboxes to old the overflow. I liked the extra action cards you could select with the Moore expansion, but it always frustrated me that the card backs were different, and so it couldn't be smoothly integrated into the game. I sold the lot some time ago when Caverna came out, as Caverna has a many-workers strategy and a few-workers strategy. Well, some time went by and I played someone else's copy of Agricola again, and it went more or less how I remembered. It did feel good to get back into it even if the experience itself hadn't changed remarkably. That's when I got curious about the revised edition. The revised edition re-balances the cards, and cuts the player count down to 4. Perhaps this helps to lessen some of the issues I had? I'm not sure yet. For now this sits on the shelf waiting for me to get the itch again. I'm hoping it re-lights the fire in my heart for Agricola. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★★☆☆ Raw enjoyment

Regelvragen

Beantwoord vanuit het spelregelboek door de regelassistent van Ludoya.

What happens if I can't feed my family at Harvest?

You must take one Begging card for each missing Food (you may not remove family members to avoid feeding); each Begging card costs you 3 Victory Points at the end of the game (see page 4).

If I take Family Growth, does the newborn count for actions and how much food do they eat at that Harvest?

The newborn is not available for use in the round it is produced (it only becomes a usable adult from the following round), and it consumes 1 Food in that Harvest (adult family members consume 2 Food) (see pages 5 and 4).

Can I convert Grain, Vegetables or animals into Food whenever I want?

Grain and Vegetables in your personal supply may be converted to 1 Food at any time (some Improvements improve that rate), but unprocessed animals have no Food value unless you use a specific Improvement that converts animals to Food; baking grain into bread requires an oven-type Improvement and the Bake action (see pages 6 and 4).

Do I have to Plow a field again after Harvest before Sowing?

No — a harvested (empty) field can be re-Sown without Plowing; the Plow action is only needed to create a new field tile (see page 6).

Do stables need to be fenced to hold animals, and how do stables affect pasture capacity?

An unfenced stable still holds exactly one animal, but if you place a stable inside a fenced pasture it doubles the capacity of that entire pasture; you may also fence around a stable later to include it in a pasture (see pages 7 and 6).

Can two family members use the same Action space in the same round?

No — each Action space may be used by only one Family member per round, and you place Family members one at a time during the Work phase (see page 3).
