Players act as homeroom teachers trying to identify three students who are absent before class. Each student corresponds to a letter; players are dealt hands that show which letters are definitely present in classrooms and therefore not missing. Play proceeds by exchanging clues in the form of five-letter words. When a player is asked, they respond with a number indicating how many letters from that word appear in their hand, but not which ones; that information is used to deduce which three letters are the missing students. Scoring rewards correct identification of the three absentees and learning which letters are in opponents’ hands.
