Players act as leaders of rival Mayan cities vying for divine favor across the Yucatán peninsula. Each round represents a season during which players deploy warlords to capture prisoners, expand influence, and recruit mythological creatures and heroes to bolster their forces. Captured prisoners are sacrificed at the end of each season to gain reputation, with each sacrifice required to surpass the previous one in prestige. Players manage evolving warlords, plan area control and combat, and balance short-term gains against the escalating demands of the gods to build a city whose ritual prestige endures.
