玩家们秘密地将不同长度的舰艇编排在隐藏的方格网格上。 每回合，一名玩家宣布要向对手网格中的哪些坐标开火；对手则说明是命中还是未命中，并在可见的记录网格上做标记。 玩家根据命中与未命中的规律推断舰艇位置，并试图击沉敌方所有舰艇。 可选的齐射规则允许玩家根据自己仍在场上的舰艇数量，在每回合进行多次射击。
