A perpetual haze of rain hangs over the vast city-world of Ravnica, where diverse citizens conduct their business among bustling markets and shadowed alleys. Ten guilds vie for power, wealth, and influence, each serving a distinct civic function while pursuing its own interests. The guilds include crime syndicates, scientific institutions, churches, military forces, courts, swarms, and gangs. Their long history is shaped by war, intrigue, and political maneuvering, with each guild bringing its own races, creatures, customs, and subculture to the setting.
