Risk: Star Wars Edition

Players recreate the climactic conflicts from Return of the Jedi across a TIE fighter–shaped board that divides play into three concurrent theaters of war. Two or four players take the roles of the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire and deploy units that represent characters, ships, and ground forces. Combat resolves with classic Risk-style dice, while players maneuver forces between theaters and contest control of key objectives. The overall goal is to either defend or destroy the Death Star by coordinating attacks and reinforcements across the three distinct battlefronts.

This is a very entertaining dice-based filler game, that actually gives you interesting choices to make on your turns. The general idea is that the rebel player(s) need to destroy the shield generator and then blow up the death star. The imperial player(s) need to destroy all the rebel ships. Meanwhile, Vader and Luke are over there in the corner having a duel, and if one of them wins that duel it means the winning side gets a major advantage in the game. Each player gets a hand of 6 cards, then chooses three and puts them in a pile. The the cards are resolved one player at a time from the top to the bottom. Each card has two or three action options on it, and there are ways to score bonus cards to the bottom of your stack netting you free actions. The game is very tight, and although success and failure ultimately come down to die luck, the game feels very satisfying. Especially for such a game with such short playtime. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ☆ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment
