Furnace

Players act as 19th-century industrialists buying companies, extracting raw materials and processing them into profit while building corporate engines. The game runs four rounds of auction and production. In the auction phase, players place value-marked discs on visible company cards to bid for ownership or to take scaled compensation or processing benefits. In the production phase, owned companies are activated in chosen order to produce resources, convert them, upgrade cards, and generate income. Capitalist cards add asymmetric abilities, and an optional rule locks acquired companies into a production chain for a tighter engine-building challenge. The player with the most money after four rounds wins.

Juego de pujas donde solo tiene emoción si juegas con la variante de hacer la producción según vayas cogiendo cartas. Tal como esta el mercado hay muchos mejores, totalmente prescindible.

#42 (mit Matte in Schachtel) Very nice auction mechanism and engine building. After played twice, the strategy seems clear, go for the buildings which can give you 2x8 VPs or 2x7. Unfortunately it's a little bit a multiplayer solitaire. First impressions: I like it just about as much as I expected. The bidding phase is really fun and unique (it's like a bidding / worker placement hybrid), the compensation system is great. The production phase (a.k.a. cube pushing) is nothing outstanding, but it is solid and satisfying, too. Elegant, both in looks and gameplay. Keeper for now, we'll see if it gets old anytime soon. That said, there's an odd disconnection between the innovative, interactive and exciting bidding phase and the somewhat dry, basic and silent production phase, but somehow it still works. I'm looking forward to the expansion, I'm wondering if it will only bloat the gameplay or if it will truly improve its weaker parts.

ルールに関する質問

Ludoyaのルールアシスタントがルールブックに基づいて回答しています。

If I win a Company card, do I still get the compensation printed at the top?

No — the player who wins the card does not receive that card's compensation; only the players who were outbid get compensated (page 4).

How does compensation scale with the value of my disc?

For extraction compensations you gain the listed resources multiplied by your disc's value, and for processing compensations you may perform the processing up to as many times as your disc's value (pages 4–5).

Can I place more than one of my own discs on the same Company card during the auction?

No — you cannot have two discs belonging to the same player on a single card (page 4).

If I upgrade a Company card during the Production Phase, can I then use its additional (upgraded) effect in the same phase?

Only if you upgrade it before resolving that card; if you resolve its basic effect first and then upgrade it, you cannot go back to resolve the additional effect that round (page 5).

Are extraction effects optional or mandatory?

Extraction effects are mandatory — you must take the full extraction listed and cannot refuse or take it partially (page 3).

In which order are auction cards and compensations resolved, and can resources gained from one compensation be spent on another?

Auction cards are resolved left to right one by one, and because of that extraction compensations to the left can produce resources that are then spent by compensation effects to the right, so the left-to-right order matters (page 5).
