Horus Heresy

Two players reenact the climactic civil war between loyalist and traitor forces across the Imperial palace and the surrounding landscape. Each side fields Space Marine legions, Chaos units, Titans, armies and key characters that influence the course of battle. Players issue orders using an initiative system that requires planning, then resolve combat with a card-driven mechanic that balances escalating damage, allocation between attack and defense, and unit-specific powers. Scenarios provide different setups and difficulty levels, including a guided opening scenario for new players, while a detailed three-dimensional map and numerous sculpted miniatures represent the terrain and fortifications of Terra.

This is a really good implementation of Fantasy Flight game mechanics into a 2 player environment. It has pieces of Twilight Imperium, Chaos in the Old World and Rex all streamlined nicely for 2 players. The game setup time is a bit long for the payoff, but there are a lot of interesting choices to make and just the right amount of randomness (meaning, not too much randomness) as the game is pleasingly diceless. I don't care much for the story, as I'm not invested in the whole Warhammer thing. The components are pretty cool looking through, and I like how the strength of the units is immediately discernible by the base of the mini. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment

Perfect recreation of Heresy event. A must for every Warhammer 40K fan, and an excellent option for 2 players.
