Copenhagen

A delightful filler game. Each turn you either take 2 cards from the center display, or play a set of cards where they all have the same color, and then take a tetris piece with boxes equal to the number of cards spent. You then lay it in your player board so long as one square of it rests on either the bottom of the board or on top of a previously placed shape. The tricky part comes in where you get a 1 card discount if the piece you are placing touches a piece of matching color of a previously placed piece. It's 1 point for a completed row, 2 points for a completed column, or double that if you managed to line up the window icons on the pieces you placed so that there's one on every space involved in the line completion in which case you score double. It's a race to 12 points. When a player covers a shield icon they can unlock a bonus ability tile or untap all their spent bonus ability tiles. There's also an end game timer card, but we never hit it before someone managed twelve. Setup and breakdown are quick. The pieces are nice. Turns flow well, and there's enough of a puzzle here that it's a real delight if we need something quick before or after our big game of the night. I also really enjoyed the mini expansions. They are rules light, and add some nice things. One gives you more options for special ability tiles, one gives you a 1x1 wild that can also go on top of an existing tile to add a window, and one gives you two special bonus point conditions each player can shoot for. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ☆ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★★☆☆ Raw enjoyment
