Players act as archaeologists traveling Europe to study five ancient cultures and excavate their sites. Actions consume weeks on a 52-space calendar track, and turn order follows whoever is furthest back in time, so travel, research, and digs all require time management. Excavations draw from civilization-specific decks that mix treasures, knowledge, and dirt; portions of each deck are removed unseen and dirt cards are recycled, creating imperfect information. Greater archaeological knowledge speeds up digs and increases the odds of finding valuable artifacts. Periodic exhibitions in major cities award prizes to the player who presents the best collection at the correct time.
