Kohle & Kolonie
Players manage small coal mines in the 19th–early 20th century Ruhr, modernizing facilities and preparing for consolidation into larger mines. Gameplay revolves around investing money and workers to upgrade mines, maintaining railway infrastructure linked to operations, and competing in auctions to take control of newly merged mines. Neglecting investment or labor increases the risk of mining accidents, which create penalties that affect future bids and operations. The winner is the player who most effectively balances modernization, workforce availability, infrastructure, and auction strategy.

Garfield8,0 The game mechanics just works. But unfortunately the rulebook is not very good and there are a lot of open important questions. The theme is not very strong, you buy mines, but there is no coal involved, just money :/ [c] Theme: ★★☆☆☆ <!-- size 7]Little --> Gameplay: ★★★★☆ <!-- size 7]Very good amount of choices --> Interaction: ★★★★☆ <!-- size 7]Competition about who buys which mines --> Artwork: ★★★★☆ <!-- size 7]It fits the theme very good --> Luck: ★★☆☆☆ <!-- size 7]Random consolidation order --> Strategy: ★★★☆☆ <!-- size 7]I see only 2 strategies, but the whole game is very strategic --> Components: ★★☆☆☆ <!-- size 7]Ok, but some error on components --> Play duration: ★★☆☆☆ <!-- size 7]A little bit too long (2h43min@4) --> Easy to teach: ★★☆☆☆ <!-- size 7]It's not complicated, but a lot to teach (60min) --> Rules quality: ★☆☆☆☆ <!-- size 7]Very poor. Unstructured, almost no example, a lot of open questions --> Setup time: ★★★☆☆ <!-- size 7]Ok --> No downtime: ★★★☆☆ <!-- size 7]Some turns plays very fast and sometimes you have to think a little bit longer --> Replay value: ★★☆☆☆ <!-- size 7]Almost nothing changes between games --> [/c]
Evan8,5 Right off the bat, the rulebook as written is unusable. Some of the unofficial rulebooks posted to bgg are helpful, but they are each flawed in their own way. This game takes a lot of patience to get started. Once it does, it runs smoothly and beautifully. In essence, on the board, there are these mine spots. Each spot has a bunch of different mines. The mine tiles become available in different rounds and you can buy them and they produce money for you each turn. On some rounds, the spot collapses into one mine tile, that everyone involved in the mine can bid on in addition to that, every round every mine on the board scores you points for each player you share a location with plus one for each house that you own bordering it. Houses always border a few different mines, so if you build sensibly and work on getting enough money to win actions, you can do really well. It's that delightful thing where you want to share spots with people, but not tooo much and then there are a lot of other rules in terms of how you max your efficiency and pick up bonuses. I feel like for future plays I need to write myself notes about how to explain this game, so that I don't have to stumble through rulebooks again. ☆ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ★ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★★★★ Raw enjoyment
