Players pilot paddle wheelers down a shifting stretch of river, racing to reach the finish while stopping to pick up passengers. River tiles are revealed as the boats move, so captains must plan speed and steering with limited coal to execute maneuvers and avoid hazards. The box combines the original game with an expansion that adds higher player counts and a black paddle wheeler controlled by the current last-place player; advanced rules introduce floating logs and sandbars for additional navigation challenges.
