Ghost Stories

I giocatori sono monaci taoisti che cooperano per proteggere un villaggio da ondate di fantasmi e dalle incarnazioni del signore dell’inferno, Wu-Feng. A ogni turno viene generato un nuovo fantasma e piazzato sul tabellone del villaggio; i monaci si muovono tra le caselle per usare le azioni speciali del villaggio, tendere trappole, liberare luoghi infestati, resuscitare monaci caduti o esorcizzare i fantasmi adiacenti. Gli esorcismi si risolvono tirando dadi colorati e spendendo Tao token colorati per abbinare la resistenza di un fantasma; fantasmi diversi e incarnazioni di Wu-Feng hanno abilità uniche che complicano il gioco. Il gruppo vince sconfiggendo l’ultima incarnazione di Wu-Feng e perde se troppe caselle diventano infestate, se muoiono tutti i monaci o se il mazzo finisce mentre Wu-Feng è ancora presente.

The first thing to mention is that this game is HARD. Really hard. But if you're into a challenge (and a lot of fun) then this might be one to consider picking up. As a collaborative game, ghost stories manages to make a frantic yet rewarding experience, despite the issues often found in co-op games. For example, the irritating alpha player system that so often arises in games like pandemic and betrayal is completely non-existent here, due entirely to the sheer difficulty of the game. If no-one knows what the hell is going on then no-one can take over. The gameplay itself is hard to understand at first, but after a few games it clicks, making for some of the most exhilerating and satifying moments I've ever experienced in a game. Furthermore, the semi-asymetricality of the character abilities adds a touch of personality to the game, forging roles within the group aside from those explicitely mentioned. These abilities are very well balanced, with each feeling satisfactorially different and significant, yet not so game breaking as to ensure the game revolves around the powers assigned to each player. Honestly, there isn't much I can think of that the game lacks, aside from maybe a difficulty that exludes a certain playerbase. It's snappy, intense, adrenaline-inducing, and genuinly fun, all contributing to a spectacular and often hilarious mish-mash of mechanics that still seem to blend into each other expertly. One of the hardest cooperative board games ever. Created by Bauza. I thought is gonna like me more, but I found it kind of imposible and not so great.
