Tyrants of the Underdark: Board Game

Players lead rival Drow houses vying for dominance in the Underdark, using a hybrid of deck-building and area control. Each player’s deck represents that house’s minions, divided into five aspects that enable different tactics like assassination, recruitment, and promotion to an inner circle that scores endgame points. A shared market offers new minion cards that cost influence and enter a player’s discard pile to be shuffled into the deck; power is the other resource and is spent to deploy and move troops on the map, manipulate the city, and carry out assassinations. Points come from controlling sites, recruiting and promoting valuable minions, and eliminating opponents’ forces; the highest scorer wins. This edition includes Aberrations & Undead content.

Played for the first time yesterday in a 3-player game. Towards the end of it, the board gets very tight and the game very intense. Loved it! Rating might go higher, I love the fact that there are different decks to combine. Components are not the best but I bought a set of 3D tokens for it.

Do I need Presence in a location to assassinate there, or can I pay Power from anywhere?

You must have Presence in the location to use the Assassinate action; it also costs 3 Power to perform (see page 13). Power is spent from your resource pool when you take the action (see page 9).

What’s the difference between Deploy, Move and Supplant — can I just replace an enemy troop when I deploy?

Deploy places a troop from your deck or hand into a space (action: Deploy) and Move shifts your troops between connected spaces; Supplant is a special sequence where you first assassinate an enemy (requiring Presence) and then deploy into that space to remove their troop — you can’t supplant without the assassination step (see pages 14 and 16).

How does recruiting from the market work and when does the market refill?

You pay Influence to recruit a card from the market row; after a recruit the market is immediately refilled from the recruit deck up to the market limit (see page 15), with initial setup showing the starting market layout (see page 6).

How do Spies work and how do I return enemy spies or forces?

You place spies with the Place Spy action to gain Presence in a location; returning enemy spies or forces requires Presence and typically costs Power (for example, returning an enemy spy costs 3 Power) — see page 15 for Return forces and page 12 for Presence rules.

When does the game end and what triggers final scoring?

The game ends when an endgame trigger occurs (for example, a certain number of total control markers or running out of a deck) and then final scoring is resolved including inner-circle/promote VPs and territory control scoring as described in the Endgame and Final Scoring sections (see pages 16 and 10).
