Star Trek: Fleet Captains

Players command Federation or Klingon fleets in a competitive, campaign-style space conflict. Fleets of varied ships are drafted to a point total, then players build a set of command decks that define strategy and famous characters. Ships explore a modular hex-board of face-down sector cards, revealing planets, nebulae and episodic encounters as they move. Players complete science, influence and combat missions drawn from a mission deck determined by their ships’ mission ratings, gain points for missions and other actions like destroying ships or building starbases, and play cards to upgrade ships or assign crew. Play emphasizes mission-driven objectives and exploration as much as tactical combat, with outcomes shaped by fleet composition and chosen command decks.

Deck building / Area control game with public and secret objectives. Feels a little like 3 player Twilight Imperium. The deck building aspect both helps re-playability and hurts in that no matter how you build your deck, there are some missions from each pile that go into your deck. What I mean to say is a military starting ship will still encounter some exploration or science missions and be at a disadvantage, and a science ship will have to do some military. Not to mention, since starting ships are semi-random, there's a pressure to dig for the best ship during the upgrade times. This game also has a TON of downtime between turns, especially for what's basically a 1 on 1 or 3 player (with the expansion) game. The ships in this game are really fragile, and the bases are hard to turn for the "click" gimmick. ☆ Art, Iconography and components functional ☆ Clever or interesting mechanisms ☆ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ☆ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★☆☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment
