Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion

Play a linked campaign of 25 scenarios that sends a party of four new characters through a city investigation into mysterious disappearances. Players choose character-specific ability decks and take alternating turns of initiative-driven card play to move, attack, manipulate obstacles, and use control or support effects against 16 monster types and three bosses. The box uses a scenario book with printed maps and a simplified ruleset, and includes a five-scenario tutorial to ease new players into the core tactical cardplay and campaign progression.

Amazing tutorial of a great Dungeon Crawler!! Certainly up a notch from Descent 2nd ed. (despite not having minis for the monsters here)

Which initiative number do I use — the top or the bottom card I picked?

You choose one of the two chosen cards to be your initiative card and use that card’s initiative value to determine order; place it so its initiative is visible when cards are revealed (players then act from lowest to highest). (p.6–7)

Can I play both the top and bottom actions from the same ability card on my turn?

No — on your turn you must perform the top action of one chosen card and the bottom action of the other card (in either order), you cannot do two tops or two bottoms. (p.7)

How does short resting and exhaustion work — what if I run out of cards?

At the end of a round you may short rest to shuffle your discard into your hand but one random card is placed into your lost pile (you may instead take 1 damage to choose a different lost card once per short rest); if you ever cannot play two cards at the start of a round you become exhausted and are removed from the scenario. (p.12)

How do monsters pick who to attack and where to move?

A monster picks as its focus the character it can attack using the least movement (shortest path), ties go to the character earlier in initiative; focus does not require line-of-sight, and the monster then moves to get closer to that focus but will do nothing if it cannot reduce the distance. (p.11)

Do obstacles or adjacent targets affect ranged attacks or line-of-sight?

Only walls block line-of-sight — obstacles and figures do not; additionally, a ranged attack targeting an adjacent enemy gains Disadvantage (draw two attack modifier cards and apply the worse). (p.8–9)
