Wiz-War (Eighth Edition)

Players take on the roles of rival wizards dueling inside a shifting underground labyrinth. They cast spells, summon creatures, and set traps to attack opponents, defend themselves, and manipulate the maze. Victory comes from stealing opponents’ treasures and returning them to a home base or from eliminating rival wizards; turn structure and card-driven spells determine movement, combat, and special effects. The game supports 2–4 players and emphasizes tactical positioning, hand management of spell cards, and direct player interaction.

Action game between Wizards sending brutal spells to each other! I love the theme and all the posible combinations between cards but it's pretty chaotic and, most of games, the person who draws better, wins.

This is a wacky capture the flag game with wizards! Players run around a maze casting spells at each other, trying to grab other player's flags and bring them back to their bases, without getting zapped away. The game has a focus on take that effects and card luck, but the humor infused in everything makes the game a fun romp rather than build up and crashdown. The only thing that I've found that can lead to the game dragging down is when it's played with 4 players or a lot of obstacle spells wind up in player's hands when also there's a lack of spells to remove them. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ☆ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment

I bought this one for myself for my birthday. I'm glad I did, as I really enjoy it. Most players apparently like to use the "both of your treasures are stolen, you lose" mechanic, but that would always end up with me losing, so I don't. I think this would be really fun with 6 or 8 players. Somehow.
