Players act as regional lords during a weakening monarch’s reign, balancing loyalty to the crown with gaining popular support. Each round they recruit specialists, collect resources, build structures, write manuscripts, work at the castle, and acquire land deeds to score victory points. Movement is mediated by sending townsfolk to action spaces across the kingdom; many spaces offer upgrades, bonuses, or new abilities that chain into future turns. The game ends when the realm tips toward poverty or prosperity, and the player with the most victory points from buildings, manuscripts, castle service, and land claims wins.

Vic Granell9.0 Second played from the trilogy of the West Kingdom (third adding Raiders of the North Sea). The most difficult but also most complete of the three, also the most deviant from an exclusive worker placement game. In fact, worker placement is just one mechanic - and a small part of the game, sharing the board with rondel, deck building, resource management, among others. Played it solo against AI and liked it a lot, awaiting playing with others. With Folded Space insert.

Do I need my Viscount on a matching building to construct a Public Building, and can I use a “free building” effect to build one?
You must have your Viscount on a space with one of your previously constructed Buildings that matches the Public Building type and pay its cost, then remove your Building and place the Public Building (resolving its immediate effect); effects that grant a free Building cannot be used to construct a Public Building. (page 5)
When do Chest Tiles give their benefits — does moving cards with Rearrange trigger them?
Chest Tiles trigger only when a card is played into the first space or slid into the second or third space during Card Management; benefits are not gained when cards are moved by a Rearrange effect. (page 6)
Where do I put Chest Tiles and can I replace or discard them later?
When you gain a Chest Tile you must slot it under one of the three card spaces on your Player Board, and you may discard a previously acquired Chest Tile (removing it from the game) to make room for a new one. Also, whenever a Chest Tile is collected it is immediately replaced from the Chest Draw Pile. (page 6)
Do Chest Tiles convert icons generated by card abilities, or only the printed icons on cards?
Chest Tiles only care about printed Icons on cards in their spaces and do not affect Icons generated from card abilities; each Icon converted can be used only once during a primary action and conversion is optional. (page 7)
Is taking one of the faceup Hero Townsfolk cards a hire and do I have to pay Silver to take it?
Gaining one of the three faceup Hero Townsfolk Cards is always a free action, does not require any Silver, and is not considered a hire (it also is immediately replaced from the Hero Draw Pile). (page 4)
Some Hero Townsfolk cards show a removal symbol — what happens when that card drops off my Player Board?
If a Hero Townsfolk card with the removal symbol drops off your Player Board, it is removed from the game entirely after all other bottom-row effects on that card have been resolved. (page 4)
